Do you need Push or Freedom?

There are two types of people

  • Who work only when there is a lot of pressure on them. They need to be pushed through deadline, appraisal, assessment, training etc.
  • Who are self motivated. They work better if they have freedom.
We can belong to any of the above categories. Actually, we belong to both depending upon the task. Let us take the example of Virat Kohli, He might need a push in bowling. Does he need any push in batting? obviously not. In my opinion, if he is pushed for batting, his performance might decrease. In other words, he needs freedom in batting.

In General, the freedom could be in setting your deadline, choosing the style of working , identifying the set of tasks to reach the goal  etc.
Do you need full freedom? No!

If given full freedom you might not perform at all.Let me take my own example, In semester vacations, my productivity is lower than normal semester days.I generally start my vacation with full enthusiasm with some ambitious goals. For first few days I  am successful in attaining good progress and few days later I involve myself in useless activities. I have failed in achieving great success so far whenever I have full freedom (Let us hope that this trend doesn't continue).

In my opinion there is an optimum level of freedom which should be given to any particular individual. If you are in a position to select the level of freedom by yourself, first identify the freedom level for you and select the work environment accordingly.
There are various factors which can decide the level of freedom:

  1. Interest in the task: Higher the interest, higher is the degree of freedom required. For example, if a person is too much interested in playing cricket. He will find his ways to do that.
  2. Competency: Higher the competency higher is the degree of freedom required. For example, if a person is good at Mathematics, he should be given freedom to learn it in his own way.
  3. General desire for freedom: Every individual has his/her own preference for freedom. Some can forgo freedom for opportunity, whereas others may not.
Now, it is up to you to analyse your desired level of freedom.
